How EFFECTIVE Is Your Home Water Filtration?

Filter more with Elkay® filtration solutions.

Many at-home water filters fail to reduce harmful contaminants, and others need to be replaced often — while bottled water is expensive and can harm the environment. Then what’s the best option? For safer, low-maintenance drinking water, choose the Elkay WaterSentry® 71300C filter, certified to reduce PFOA, PFOS, lead and more.

    What Are PFAS?

PFOA and PFOS are the two most prevalent PFAS “forever chemicals” used in everyday products that end up in our waterways because they take too long to break down. Exposure to them can cause health issues:

    Ditch the Pitcher Filters

Leading water pitcher filters are only certified to reduce chlorine taste and odor.

Elkay is certified to reduce PFOA, PFOS, lead, microplastics, cysts, Class I particulate and chlorine taste and odor for safer water that tastes great, too.

    Fridge Filters Are Failing You

Just because it’s already available to you, doesn’t mean it’s the best choice.

Elkay filters last up to 12 times longer than the leading refrigerator filter, which means less maintenance and fewer purchases.

    Bottles Are No Better

Besides being costly, single-use plastic water bottles take up storage space and pollute the environment.

Using an inline Elkay filter results in cost, space and plastic waste savings.

What are PFAS? What are forever chemicals? Where do they come from?

Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) and Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) are the two most prevalent forever (PFAS) chemicals used to make nonstick cookware, personal care products and many everyday items. When the remains of these products are discarded, PFOA/PFOS leak into our soil and water because they don’t degrade easily, which means we end up ingesting these harmful chemicals.

Total PFAS: PFAS are long-lasting synthetic chemicals used in everyday products, such as personal care, nonstick cookware and water-repellant clothing, that break down very slowly. Due to their widespread use, PFAS end up in the environment — in our water, the air, fish, soil and food. PFAS have even been found in human and animal blood. Scientific studies have shown that exposure to some PFAS may be linked to harmful health effects, such as cancer, fertility issues and child development delays. But Elkay offers an Elkay Pro Filtration filter that is tested and certified to NSF/ANSI 53 to reduce Total PFAS.* See performance data sheet for complete details.

    Lead

More than 9 million water service pipes in the U.S. are made of lead, and when they corrode, lead can leach into the water. Because you can’t smell, see or taste lead, it’s not easily detectable and harmful, especially to children. Lead exposure can damage the brain, spinal cord and nerves, cause learning disabilities and more.

    Cysts

Cysts are parasites that enter drinking water from human and animal waste, which can lead to gastrointestinal illness such as dysentery, vomiting and cramps.

    Sediment & Class I particulate

Sediment comes from sand, rocks and minerals, or may consist of organic particles of plants and microbes. Not only is sediment undesirable to consume, but too much of it could reduce flow rate.

If you live in an area where sediment pollution is high, consider adding one of our universal sediment prefilters for a two-stage filtration process. Not sure if you live in a high-sediment area? Stay up to date on your state’s water quality or visit your city’s public water site.

    Turbidity

Turbidity is the cloudiness or haziness of water, which is caused by particles that are generally too small to see. High turbidity means water appears very cloudy or muddy, and can also be an indicator of water quality, suggesting the presence of pollutants and contaminants. Turbid water looks dirty and is unappealing, which may deter people from drinking it. Elkay Pro Filtration filters are tested and certified to NSF/ANSI 53 to reduce turbidity in drinking water.

    Asbestos

Due to its fiber strength and heat resistance, asbestos was used in building construction for insulation, in pipes and cement, and as a fire retardant. While asbestos is banned now, it may be present in older homes and buildings. As these buildings age and deteriorate, and as asbestos-containing material is discarded during demolition and reconstruction of old homes, asbestos fibers may be released into waterways. Exposure to asbestos fibers increases your risk of developing lung disease. Asbestos may be found in textured paint, coated hot water and steam pipes, attic and wall insulation, vinyl floor tiles, roofing and more — but can ultimately end up in the water we drink.

    Antiscalant

Antiscalant helps minimize filter maintenance, keeping yours working effectively.

    Chlorine taste & odor

Water can be contaminated at the source and as it travels through piping, which is why many water companies add chlorine as a disinfectant. However, it can leave an undesirable taste and smell.

What are microplastics? Where are they found?

Plastic is found in countless everyday items, such as obvious items like disposable plastic containers, but also in car tires and even laundry detergent. This plastic ends up in the environment and breaks down or weathers into smaller plastic particles. These microplastics that are smaller than 5 millimeters end up everywhere — in our waterways, seafood, milk, chicken, the list goes on. This means we could be ingesting tiny bits of plastic daily.

    How to minimize microplastic consumption?

Although it’s almost impossible to avoid microplastics because they’re everywhere, there are ways to minimize exposure. Instead of plastic shopping bags and single-use plastic bottles, opt for tote bags and reusable water bottles. Fill reusable bottles with filtered water — Elkay filters are tested and certified to NSF/ANSI 401 to reduce microplastics. Heat food in glass containers instead of plastic ones, which can release millions of microplastic particles in your food.

Are Elkay filtration systems compatible with all Elkay bottle filling stations?

Most Elkay filters are designed to fit standard Elkay bottle filling station models. Always check the model number for compatibility.

How do I know it’s time to replace my Elkay Pro Filtration filter?

Elkay Pro Filtration bottle filling stations are equipped with an intuitive filter status display, consisting of blue LEDs. When the third status light turns red, it’s time to change your filter.

When should I change my Elkay Pro Filtration sediment filter?

We recommend changing your sediment prefilter when you change your primary contaminant reduction filter, but for applications with higher levels of sediment, more frequent replacements of the sediment filter may be required — if the flow rate seems significantly reduced.

Why does my system automatically flush after the filter is installed?

After you install your Elkay Pro Filtration filter, your bottle filling station will automatically reset the filter status lights and begin the automated flush system. We recommend allowing the unit to complete the flush to make sure all air bubbles created when the water was turned off are out of the system and the filter is flushed properly for optimal performance.

Can I upgrade my bottle filter to include a sediment filter?

Every Elkay Pro Filtration bottle filling station is designed for use with a contaminant reduction filter and an optional sediment prefilter. You may purchase your sediment prefilter separately, or you can buy the specific Elkay Pro Filtration bottle filling station that ships with the sediment prefilter (LZS8WSBPRO-FSR5 or LZSTL8WSBPRO-FSR5).

What are the benefits of having a sediment filter?

If you live in an area with high sediment levels in your water, a sediment prefilter can help improve your water quality. The sediment prefilter works first to reduce sediment in incoming water. This improves water quality and helps prevent sediment from building up in your primary contaminant reduction filter, making it more effective.
